A team committed to your wellbeing

Many companies offer the services of a professional caregiver who does not belong to the healthcare field. At Galeneo, our team is made up entirely of healthcare professionals.

Comprehensive care for Alzheimer's patients requires the collaboration of a multidisciplinary team that addresses the medical, emotional and social aspects of the disease. A personalised approach and continuous adaptation of the care plan are essential in responding to the changing needs of the patient over time.

These are some of the specialties we offer:

Getting to know the disease

At Galeneo we have a deep understanding of how to care for patients with chronic disease, especially Alzheimer's and the impact it has on a person's health. Here are some basic facts that are important to know if you or a member of your family suffers from this condition.

1.

Definition and incidence

  • Alzheimer's disease is a disease of the brain, usually of a chronic or progressive nature, in which there is a deficit of multiple higher cortical functions that impact on the daily activities of the sufferer. Of the different types of dementia, Alzheimer's is the most common among the diseases and pathologies of the elderly.

  • The Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) estimates that in Spain there are more than 800,000 people suffering from this disease. Worldwide, the number of sufferers goes up to 50 million. And due to the ageing population, its incidence continues to rise. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be more than 115 million people affected by this type of dementia.

2.

The first symptoms

  • Memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Placing things in unusual places
  • Difficulty remembering the name of everyday objects
  • Frequent repetition of questions
  • Loss of sense of orientation (time and space)
  • Difficulty in performing easy tasks and simple actions
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed

3.

Other cognitive and behavioural symptoms

Due to the progressive nature of Alzheimer's, patients are aware of the mental and physical degradation they are experiencing. Memory is often the first of the physical and mental impairments observed by the patient or family members.

This progressive deterioration causes a series of symptoms that appear as the disease progresses:

  • Delusions
  • Unusual behaviour
  • Tension and nervousness
  • Sadness, apathy and passivity (or irritation and anger)
  • Fear of failure, due to the incapability of carrying out tasks that have hitherto been part of everyday life.
  • Lack of confidence and degradation of self-image, due to inability to perform daily tasks
  • Isolation, caused by the progressive difficulty in recognising family members.
  • Disorientation, due to deterioration of memory and sense of direction
  • Confusion, as logic and reasoning are altered
